Get your lifeguard certification! This course will provide participants the skills needed to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will also gain the knowledge to provide professional level care for cardiac and breathing emergencies, injuries and sudden illness until emergency medical personnel take over. This 2-year certification will qualify participants for most entry-level aquatic positions. Participants must be at least 15 years of age and able to complete the following pre-requisites:
- Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed.
- Swim goggles may be used.
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. You should place your hands under your armpits.
- Complete the following timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
- Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object while keeping your face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. You should not swim the distance under water.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

The purpose of this instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross Swimming Lessons. Participants will be instructed on the strategies for planning and preparing for effective and safe swim lessons. Course materials are not provided to keep class costs to a minimum but are available to purchase or download from the American Red Cross website. Participants must be able to complete the following prerequisites:
- Swim the following strokes consistent with Learn to Swim Level 4 standards:
- Front Crawl-25 yards
- Back Crawl-25 yards
- Breaststroke-25 yards
- Elementary Backstroke-25 yards
- Sidestroke-25 yards
- Butterfly-15 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
- Tread water for 1 minute
Students must complete online work for this class. Information will be emailed one week before the class.

Junior JAC Pac
The Junior JAC Pac is a motivated and energetic group of kids who have the potential to become lifeguards and swim instructors when they become of age. Hone your swim skills together and have fun at the Jones Aquatic Center all summer long. Eligible Pac members are between the ages of 11 - 15 and must be able to pass the following prerequisites:
- Swim 25 yards using Front Crawl Stroke
- Swim 25 yards using Breaststroke
- Tread water for 1 minute
Junior Pac members will attend a 2-week training program and then have an opportunity to practice and utilize their skills throughout the rest of the JAC season. Upon successful completion of the training period, members will receive an official JAC Pac t-shirt. Junior Pac Members can volunteer to job shadow during facility public swim, swim lessons, special events, and activities. They can earn points for volunteering at events and activities. Points can be redeemed for prizes and a fee reduction for lifeguard training or swim instructor training once they turn 15.
