2024 KRPA Awards featuring RonThomas and TomMcEvoy

The Kansas Recreation and Parks Association (KRPA) has awarded Emporia’s Radio Stations, Inc with the 2024 Distinguished Organization Award.  The Emporia Recreation Commission nominated Ron Thomas and KVOE staff for this award due to their long-time support of the ERC, from reporting on Board meetings to promoting and supporting the ERC’s vision of enhancing and supporting the health and wellness goals of our community through diversified recreation programs and activities. “KVOE and Ron Thomas are longtime supporters of the Emporia Recreation Commission and are an integral part of our community’s success,“ said Tom McEvoy, Emporia Recreation Center Director.

The KRPA Distinguished Organization Award is not just about contributions to Recreation.  It’s also about creativity, innovations, leadership and service to the community. For the last 22 years, the staff of KVOE facilitates the annual KVOE Drive for Food which supports the Emporia Salvation Army Food Pantry and Emporia High School Spartan Stop food pantry program. Each November the station uses its airwaves to put on the National Teachers Hall of Fame radio auction which not only helps to raise funds for the hall of fame, but also highlights the work of educators from across the nation. KVOE is also heavily involved each year in promoting and reporting the annual Emporia Community Foundation Match Day, United Way of the Flint Hills Fundraising Campaign, Flint Hills Technical College gala and many other events that raise funds to support local non-profits, businesses, education and much more. KVOE is also the "Voice of the Hornets" with Blake Cripps commentating Emporia State University football games and Tagan Trahoon, native Emporian, commentating Emporia State Men's and Women's Basketball. Cripps and Trahoon also report on ESU Volleyball, Track and Soccer. Dylan Sherwood is the Voice of the Emporia High Spartans as well as reports on surrounding high school sporting events in Olpe, Lebo, Madison and Chase County. These staff members support the teams and players on and off the field by attending banquets, special events and many other extras in their spare time.

Emporia's Radio Stations, Inc is a locally owned radio station with deep ties to the community including having multiple Emporia natives employed with the organization. The station is not simply located in Emporia, it is rooted within the fabric and foundation of the community and strives each day to highlight its successes, keep residents informed during tragedies and be a warm and inviting presence to all.
